PERVALIS is contributing to the development of autonomous navigation and tracking of pedestrians or vehicles in GPS-deprived environments.
GPS-free indoor positioning is challenging when no insfrastructure (BT, WiFi …) or magnetic field map is available.
Dead reckoning methods alone, using inertial and magnetic sensors, cannot meet the requirements.
Moreover, indoor positioning is useless without a map. Since floor plans are often unavailable, imaging sensors are needed to enable mapping the environment.
But VSLAM, a state-of-the art visual navigation technique, preferably works with 3D (depth-sensing) sensors rather than monocular cameras.
Using off-the-shelf smartphone-type inertial and optical sensors, PERVALIS has developed a solution that takes advantage of the geometric properties of man-made environments.
It describes the environment along the mobile path, and provides both its relative position and orientation.
